Understanding Preventive Dentistry

Preventive care and diagnostics are key to optimal oral health and a bright, beautiful smile. Your dental hygiene visits to NYCPros includes thorough clinical exams, oral cancer screening, and personalized home care instruction — all provided by our team of dedicated and skilled hygienists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental Prophylaxis: Your hygienist will thoroughly clean, floss, and polish your teeth removing tartar, plaque, and stains.

Exam: You can expect a thorough clinical examination of your mouth to identify any potential areas of decay, enamel erosion, gum recession, or areas at risk for gum disease.

Oral Cancer Screening: Your hygienist will do a complete head and neck exam along with a soft tissue exam that includes the tongue, gum tissues and back of the throat to help screen for oral cancer.

X Rays: X Rays are the key to early detection. Dental problems often go unnoticed in their early stages since they may not cause pain or show any visible signs. Early detection can prevent a dental emergency and allow for more conservative treatment choices.

Home Care Coaching: At each visit your hygienist will review your current home care program and provide education and a personalized plan to level up your routine. Your hygienist may also recommend and demonstrate one of the latest home care tools to help you maintain your dental hygiene between office visits.

Most patients benefit from a visit every six months. In some cases, more frequent visits are recommended to help maintain periodontal health or for caries prevention. Your Doctor will talk it over with you and determine the best schedule for you and your hygienist will send out a reminder when you are due for your regular checkup.

You may be surprised to know that the benefits of maintaining good dental health extend far beyond your mouth. Today’s growing body of research demonstrates a clear connection between oral health and the health of your body’s systems such as the cardiovascular, metabolic, and even the brain itself. The positive news is oral health is often within your control through diet, a good homecare routine, and regular preventive visits to your dentist.
